Nels popp, president
Nels Popp is an Assistant Professor in the Sport Administration program at the University of North Carolina. His main research interests include revenue generation in intercollegiate athletics and sport ticket sales. His work and expertise has been referenced in ESPN.com, the SportsBusiness Journal, and The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Dr. Popp's research has been published in a variety of academic journals such as Sport Marketing Quarterly and the Sport Management Review. Prior to teaching, he worked in media relations and event management for NCAA Division II (Bellarmine) and NAIA (Viterbo) athletic departments, as well as with the Cairns Taipans in Australia’s National Basketball League.
joris drayer, Past-President
Joris Drayer is Associate Professor in the Sport and Recreation Management Program at Temple University. Prior to joining Temple, he worked in marketing and also performed statistical analysis for the Oakland Athletics’ operations department. His experience in marketing and analytics led him to his two primary research areas: pricing and consumer behavior. He's written over 35 peer-reviewed articles, many which relate to the dynamic that exists between primary and secondary ticket markets. In addition to his academic work, which includes the 2010, 2013, and 2014 Sport Marketing Association Best Paper Award. Joris has offered expert commentary for the New York Times, ESPN, Bloomberg News, and the Philadelphia Business Journal. In all, his work has appeared in the Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, and Sport Marketing Quarterly among other journals.
windy dees, President-elect
Dr. Windy Dees is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences at University of Miami. Prior to obtaining her Ph.D., she was an Account Executive for Synergy Sports Marketing where she serviced corporate sponsorships and conducted hospitality and event management services for several professional golfing events. This experience has led to a research specialization in the areas of sponsorship effectiveness and event marketing. She has published 25 peer-reviewed research articles in sport management and multiple book chapters. She currently serves as an Executive Editor of the Global Sport Business Journal, and is an Editorial Board member of Sport Marketing Quarterly.
Jim Kadlecek, Executive Director
Dr. Kadlecek is Chair of the Department of Human Performance and Sport Business at the University of Mount Union, where he teaches sport sales, public relations, marketing of sport, and sport analytics. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Sport Marketing Association, as well as the Director of the Sport Sales Workshop and Job Fair. In addition to his scholarly activities and service, Jim works as a consultant for many sport organizations.
BRandon Brown, Vice President of Academic Affairs
Dr. Brandon Brown is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Sport Management in the School of Professional Studies at New York University. In addition to serving as a marketing consultant for several professional sport entities, Dr. Brown has spent a number years working with the New York Mets in Queens, New York. He has spent his professional and academic career concentrating on the Sports Management field. Formerly teaching a number of Sports Management courses at the University of Tampa, Dr. Brown has spent time at Texas A&M University, the University of Central Florida, and Florida State University earning his PhD, MBA, and BS respectively. He has authored a number of book chapters, as well as refereed journal articles, with his current line of study focusing on sport marketing, consumer behavior, and minority consumption habits. His work has appeared in Sport Marketing Quarterly, and the Journal of Sport and Social Issues.
Todd Koesters, Vice President of Industry Relations
Todd C. Koesters received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University, a Master of Sports Administration degree from Ohio University and a Juris Doctor degree from Capital University Law School. Professor Koesters joined USC from Churchill Downs Entertainment Group (CDE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Churchill Downs Inc., where he served as vice president of marketing and sales. Prior to joining CDE, he worked for one of the largest sports and entertainment event marketing firms, GMR Marketing, as vice president of Sports Group where he was responsible for sales and other strategic growth initiatives within its burgeoning sports practice. While at GMR, his team received the SportsBusiness Journal's Event Marketing Firm of the Year Award. He was inducted into The GMR Hall of Fame in 2008.
Jason simmons, Vice President of Student Affairs
Jason Simmons is an Assistant Professor of Sport Administration at the University of Cincinnati. He teaches Sport Marketing and Sport Public Relations. His research focuses on the intersection of sport and family, specifically inter role conflict between sport and family roles, as well as sport consumer behavior.
Beth Cianfrone, Member at Large
Dr. Beth Cianfrone is an Associate Professor of Sport Administration at Georgia State University, where she is the graduate program coordinator and Co-Director of the Sport and Urban Policy Initiative. Her research interests are sport marketing communications and sport consumer behavior. She has published in numerous academic journals, including Sport Marketing Quarterly and Journal of Sport Management. She serves on the editorial board for Sport Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Sport Management, Journal of Applied Sport Management, and Sport & Entertainment Review.
Stephen SHAPiro, Editor of Sport Marketing Quarterly
Dr. Stephen Shapiro is currently an Associate Professor of Sport Management at the University of South Carolina. His research is in the areas of sport finance and marketing, with a focus on ticket pricing in and consumer behavior as it is related to purchase and charitable contribution decisions. Specific research topics include dynamic ticket pricing in sport, college athletic donor behavior, luxury suite price determinants, consumer demand in sport, and fantasy sport consumer behavior. He has conducted research for the Norfolk Tourism Research Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, the United States Olympic Committee, the Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Avalanche, among others.
Joseph Pederson, Social Media Manager
Dr. Joseph Pederson is an Assistant Professor of Sport Administration at Samford University. His interests include new media marketing and interactive brand communication. His research is informed by his diverse sport industry experience in the areas of public relations, broadcasting, and sponsorship. His research and expertise was recognized by the Association of College Unions International and the American Marketing Association, and his research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Sport Communication.
