SMA is pleased to announce the details for the 2017 The Aspire Group Case Study Bowl, scheduled to take place during this year's SMA conference on November 1-3, 2017, in Boston, MA. As part of a continued effort to bridge academia with the industry, we will once again work with The Aspire Group and secure a "real world" client for the case competition. We hope that you will consider entering a team in the The Aspire Group Case Study Bowl competition. To register your team, please send an email to Joe Mahan, VP of Student Affairs.


  • Current undergraduate students may compete in the case study bowl
  • Competition is limited to sixteen (16) entries
  • Students and advisors must be officially registered for the conference by DATE TO BE DETERMINED
  • Student teams will respond to the Case Study over a 24-hour period
  • Faculty advisors who wish to enter team must notify SMA Vice President of Student Affairs Joe Mahan ( by DATE TO BE DETERMINED, providing the following information in the email:
    • Subject line: SMA Case Study Entry
    • E-mail body: name of faculty advisor, e-mail address of faculty advisor, cell phone number of faculty advisor, name of school
  • Tentative list of student team members (minimum of 3 students; maximum of 4 students)

schedule of events

  • Monday, October 23rd: Participating faculty advisors will receive by e-mail a preview that introduces the general topic of the case study; this will provide student teams the opportunity to do some initial research into the topic prior to arriving at the conference
  • Tuesday, October 31st: Participating faculty advisors will receive by e-mail the official case study, rules, and time of presentation(s)
  • Wednesday, November 1st: Participating team members (and advisors) must arrive in Boston
  • Wednesday November 1st (5:45pm): Rules meeting (advisors and team captains required to attend). All teams are required to submit an electronic copy (details TBA) of a final PowerPoint presentation (updates and/or revisions will not be allowed); print copies are NOT necessary; presentations should NOT include items with internet requirements
  • Thursday, November 2nd: Presentations will begin at 9:00am and will continue in increments of 30 minutes; teams will be given 20 minutes to present, followed by five minutes of Q&A by the Judging Panel
  • Thursday, November 2nd: The Judging Panel will select the finalists (number TBD) and notify the faculty advisors via cell phone
  • Friday, November 3rd: Finalists (number TBD) will present beginning at 9:00am.
  • The winning team will be announced at the Presidents Luncheon, and will be presented with a special The Aspire Group Case Study Bowl trophy
